Tukwila: The Quad-Core Chip
The first chip to pack more than two billion transistors is about to be launched by Intel.
The quad-core chip, known as Tukwila, operates at speeds up to 2Ghz, like a standard PC chip. Last year IBM released what was described as the “world’s fastest commercial chip” that operates at 4.7Ghz, but their dual-core Power6 processor contains just 790 million transistors.

Intel is set to unveil Tukwila at the International Solid State Circuits Conference this week.
