initial thoughts on Zannel

Via our lord and sponsor and the good people of Whitechapel comes word of yet another communications tool/social-network: Zannel.

As Warren says, it’s basically Twitter with Photo/Video payloads; something we’ve talked about before. So whilst Twittershare still hasn’t added post-by-email support, is this perhaps the tool we need to easily microblog with rich content from the field?

My initial investiagation says Yes; so long as: a) you’re in the US and b) on one of the approved networks. For such lucky people it really is almost Twitter++.

For the rest of us (at least for the moment) it’s kinda useless. You can still email in photos/videos from your smartphone; but we already had this feature from Flickr/Vox. So for the meantime, it joins Jott and others as useful technologies out of reach to all people non-US.

Now, back to those lucky people for whom Zannel is usable – I just said almost didn’t I. So what is it missing? One main thing: RSS Feeds. This is a total deal breaker. It means no remixing of content, no combining in with other feeds to form a lifestream.

Sure, it’s got fancy badges and let’s you embed on external sites (something Vox only just recently added) – but no RSS means no go. Zannel = FAIL as Twitter++. But, I’ll keep an eye on it and report back if/when it gets better.

Oh, you’re probably wondering what Zannel is good for. In short: hooking up and teh_pr0n. Apparently there’s half million on it too; so if that’s your thing (and you are eligible) sign up stat!
