GetWickd – yet another cyber-dating solution

Reader Brenna Zedan writes in to let us know about GetWickd, yet another solution developed to solve the problem of talking to strangers in bars.
The idea is this: you buy a GetWickd shirt or jacket, download an app to your phone and set up your profile.
Then, when you’re out and about, looking stylish, but unapproachable, a prospective mate (who also has the GetWicked app on their phone) can scan your code from afar and initiate contact from the safety of their mobile.
It’s powered by ShotCode, a proprietary version of QR Code, which I think we’ll be seeing more of to come.
What also interesting here is that it focuses on the mobile-web. Apart from the initial setup, all interaction is via the phone. The profile only let’s you link to your other mobile profiles – YouTube, Facebook, MySpace.
This also let’s you get to the know that person you’re staring at across the room a little better; you can see what they’re into before even talking to them.
So, in essence, by wearing the GetWickd clothing, you’re also wearing you’re online Identity.
thanks for the tip-off Brenna!

Why not just print off & wear a QR code tag with the url to your myspace etc?
@radian – indeed! i’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to make a QRCode patch that one could put on a jacket or something, if one was so inclined.
this QRCode scarf is pretty rockin’, in my opinion
Ok, so what is the difference between the code that wickd is using versus a shotcode of your myspace URL? Or is it the same, and they are just profiting off of the clothing.
I’d prefer to have the shotcode style deal on my clothing than the QR Code. It’s just a bit more aesthetically pleasing to me.
ShotCode is proprietary, as is the software.
But, from Wikipedia: “QR Code is open in the sense that the specification of QR Code is disclosed and that the patent right owned by Denso Wave is not exercised.”
You can generate your own using sites like these.
And the s/w is standard with most smartphones.
But, yes ShotCode is way prettier.

Hi Mikey, thanks for clearing that up but I felt I had to point out that QR software is far from standard on most Smartphones. Even more so, we’ve (ShotCode) managed to create the largest range of compatible mobile phones outside of Japan. Currently we support more then 250 models and an update of about 30 models is coming very soon. And off-topic I just wanted to also say we’ve recently launched together with iMatrix on the iPhone.
Cool idea but how do you know that the people you will be meeting are real and safe? http://www.imeetsafer.com provides a verification process that is FREE so that you know you are meeting REAL people.
