Oakley O ROKR PRO – A bluetooth headset in your sunglasses

It seems Oakley have progressed in their combination of technology and fashion since they debuted the THUMP mp3 player sunglasses.

Presenting the Oakley O ROKR PRO:

…the latest in the Sport Performance line of eyewear from Oakley and Motorola. O ROKR™ Pro wirelessly streams digital music, and even lets you control the music wirelessly. Just use the buttons on the frame to select songs on your Bluetooth® Stereo-enabled mobile phone or your iPod® equipped with an ICOMBI™ Bluetooth® adapter. O ROKR™ Pro also offers the convenience of hands-free wireless communication with your compatible mobile phone — which means it works as a Bluetooth® Headset except there’s nothing to clip on your ear, and the conversation comes through crystal clear in both ears.

Apparently this has been on the market since late 2006. Anybody used this in the field?

  1. A friend of mine got a pair of these and he has said the same thing a lot of people have. They are kind of bulky and cumbersome. Adding features to products sometimes takes away the overall strength of individual features. It’s like when you buy a pda that also is a camera and mp3 player, the camera and mp3 player are not going to be good.

With this product, the sunglasses don’t look as good as they would without the mp3 setup, and the mp3 player isn’t very strong.

  2. @Sunglasses Guy – you’re talking about the THUMP here, not the ROKR, yeah?!

  3. He may not be. The latest wireless earbuds from Sennheiser are revolutionary due to their not using bluetooth. Apparently earbuds were impossible with bluetooth due to the size and weight required for an adequate receiver…
That said, these look a fair bit better than those old thumps. Though I’ve always felt like Oakleys make you look like a bit of an idiot when you pair them with everyday clothes like a T shirt and pants.

  4. The sound quality is okay, but nothing spectacularly beyond the earbuds you get with your basic mp3 player.

I also have a ginormous noggin and had dificulties getting them to fit well.

  5. @mrghosty – there’s also these:

BUT, would you want to a) be seen in public in either
and b) get arrested at a beach/mall/somewhere for maybe taking illegal photos?
