DIY Algae BioGenerator with Recycled Water Bottles
Via MAKE comes this intriguing Instructable for creating ‘An Algae Bioreactor from Recycled Water Bottles‘.
This video gives a decent rundown of the concept:
And if you think that’s interesting, there’s a whole bunch more projects to try out over on Algae Geek.

I just saw that yesterday on Instructables, actually.
Not sure what exactly could be fueled by this, though.
It’s more a proof of concept for the use of algae as power source. I like it.
A friend of mine is a Bioremediall Engineer, and constantly amazes me, (quite often to his own disbelief), with his tales of using things like algae for the cleaning of soilbeds, watercourses, former industrial sites etc. Its something that I have a real interest in, mostly because of the processes, more than the result, but, whilst i am not terribly ecologically minded, I’d say that something like this acts as a good testbed for multiplying the end purposes of such processes, Bioremedial technologies that require algaes, could also generate power, doubling up their enviromental friendliness.
The fuel is biodiesel. There’s cars today on the road that can use it. If you go to the instructables.com website and read the article, you’ll see that he presses the algae to get oil – oil, once processed, is burned.
So here’s my curiousity questions: how well does it scale (small bottles of algae seems unscalable) and if you have to feed carbon dioxide, what’s the carbon footprint on that?
Anyways, it’s good food for thought.
