Need To Fly A Military Drone? Yep, There’s An iPhone App For That

MIT Professor Missy Cummings (a former F-18 Hornet Navy Pilot), and her team of 30 students and undergrads, have successfully demonstrated how an iPhone could be used to control an Unmanned Area Vehicle, or UAV.

As part of their work at MIT’s Humans and Automation Lab (HAL, heh), the team thought about ways to improve on the suitcase-sized controller that soldiers must currently lug around to control hand-thrown Raven UAVs.

The iPhone app they developed sends GPS coordinates to the craft, which then in turn can send photos and video back to the iPhone.

  2. Hmmmm. Maybe the Afghans and Pakis will figure out how to hack into the UAV frequencies and take control of our Predators. I would laugh my ass off they did. Those poor kids in Colorado would freak if all of a sudden the drones went out of their control. Maybe that’s where the opium money should be invested – Russian and Chinese hackers.

  3. Yes, the thought of American soldiers dying is certainly hilarious. be thankful they put their lives on the line so you can be an idiot. And by the way, this is for micro UAVs not predators, read the opening text. its ground pounding personnel that use this to check out close proximity so they don’t get shot.
